Why Removing Invasive Plants from Your Property is Important

Homeowners and garden enthusiasts, as you read through this, consider the importance of your role in preserving our natural ecosystems. One significant way you can contribute is by removing invasive plants from your property. If you’re wondering, why does this matter? Well, these seemingly harmless non-native plants can wreak havoc on our environment.

Understanding Invasive Species

Invasive species, contrary to their innocent appearance, are non-native plants that possess a formidable ability to outcompete native vegetation. Their aggressive growth patterns allow them to spread rapidly, choking out native plants in the process. The loss caused by invasive species is not just aesthetic; it results in a significant loss of biodiversity. Why? Because native plants act as crucial food providers and habitat creators for local wildlife and invasive plants have very little ecological value.

Habitat loss and invasive plants are the primary cause of native biodiversity loss. Invasive plant species spread aggressively and displace native plants, create monocultures, and provide little benefit to wildlife. Avoid introducing exotic plants that are known to be invasive. You can learn more from sites similar to the Ohio Invasive Plants Council where you will probably find far more plants listed as invasive than you may have ever thought.

These are Bradford Pears that were planted extensively on new construction and at businesses for years. At least it is now banned for sale on Ohio, but we’re way behind.

As we transition to a world increasingly conscious of environmental sustainability, we realize that it’s the small actions that can create significant changes. Removing invasive species from your property is one such action. You’ll be helping preserve the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems, giving native plants a fighting chance to thrive.

The revival of native plants, in turn, provides essential resources for the survival of local birds, butterflies, bees, and other wildlife. Being a good steward is hard at times especially if you remove them from your property and your neighbors have them on theirs or, even worse, they are actively planting them! Have a discussion and offer to help remove them if they’re interested in doing so.

The Impact on Soil Health

Invasive species don’t just threaten the visible greenery; they harm what lies beneath too—our soil. These foreign invaders often have shallow root systems that fail to hold the soil together efficiently. This can lead to soil erosion, a pressing environmental issue and one of the top pollutants to our local surface waters.

In contrast, many native plants have deep root systems that penetrate the soil layers, thereby aiding in soil cohesion and reducing the risk of soil erosion – the wearing away of the topsoil due to wind, water, or other activities. This lack of root depth in invasive species makes the soil more susceptible to erosion, which can lead to loss of fertile soil, increased sedimentation in rivers, and destabilization of landscapes.

Chemical Warfare and Soil Health

To add insult to injury, invasive species can release chemicals that inhibit the growth of native plants and disrupt the natural nutrient cycle. They release substances, known as allelochemicals, into the environment that inhibit the growth of other plants in their vicinity. This can give invasive species a competitive advantage, but it also disrupts the natural nutrient cycles in the soil.

Healthy soil is full of beneficial microorganisms and organic matter, all participating in a complex cycle of nutrient exchange. Plants contribute to this cycle by decomposing and returning nutrients to the soil, which are then absorbed by other plants and microorganisms.

By removing invasive plants, you allow the soil to regenerate, which fosters the growth of beneficial native plants.

Here is an example of my neighbor’s property that had a large patch of garlic mustard, an allelopathic, that grew here for years with little else. He removed it this past year, and in its place, there was a beautiful and beneficial patch of Butterweed, Packera glabella, this past spring! You can also see an Elderberry nestled in this patch.

Combatting the Spread of Invasive Species

Despite being detrimental, invasive plants are impressively resilient, capable of adapting to various environments, making them notoriously hard to control. Most gardeners have a “hit list” of plants on their property that give them headaches. Mine are currently honeysuckle, Bradford Pear, and Black Medic. Ugh.

However, we, as homeowners, can make a significant difference by remaining vigilant and proactive. By uprooting these invasive guests from our yards, we prevent their spread to nearby natural areas, protecting our local ecosystems from further damage. Even if you can’t pull them (which is always the best because it can create disturbance and expose more seeds in the seed bank) it can be beneficial to keep them from going to seed by cutting them back prior to seed dispersal.

The removal of invasive species can help to reverse negative impacts. With the invasive species gone, the soil has a chance to recover and regenerate. The chemical balance can return to normal, and native plants – with their deeper root systems – can reestablish themselves. This, in turn, improves soil stability, reduces the risk of erosion, and promotes the growth of a healthy, diverse plant community.

In addition, the return of native plants can also promote the recovery of native animal communities, as many animals rely on specific plants for food and habitat. Therefore, the removal of invasive species and the restoration of native plants can have far-reaching benefits for entire ecosystems.

Proper Techniques for Removing Invasive Plants

The act of removing invasive plants is not as simple as it might seem. It’s crucial to follow proper techniques. Begin by identifying the invasive species on your property. Many resources are available to aid in identification, including local extension offices and online guides. Once identified, you can move on to careful extraction. Dig out the invasive plants in most cases, ensuring you remove all roots to prevent regrowth. Equally important is the disposal of these plants. They mustn’t end up in compost piles or natural areas where they can potentially proliferate.

There are some plants that you may need to take extra precautions such as the removal of Poison Hemlock, Conium maculatum. As another one of its common names suggests, Deadly Hemlock, can be extremely poisonous to humans, and it is very toxic to sheep, cattle, horses, and other domestic animals.

For the removal of Poison Hemlock on my property, I identify it when it’s small. Poison hemlock stems have reddish or purple spots and streaks, are not hairy, and are hollow. I place a 5-gallon bucket upside down over it, I pin it down with sod pins in holes I drilled in the bucket’s lip, and I carefully spray Glyphosate directly on the plant through the bottom of the bucket (since it’s upside down it’s now the top) that I cut off. I keep the bucket there for a couple of rounds of applications because they don’t always die on the first application.

Once the invasive plants are removed, you may start to see native plants emerge that you had no idea were even there. They just need that advantage to get established. Invasive plants such as Bradford Pear, honeysuckle, and Autumn Olive can create dense areas where native plants can easily be choked out and overrun.

Of course, you will also need to eliminate the use of pesticides in order to enjoy your new beneficial pollinators.

Embrace Native Plants

To keep invasive species at bay, consider filling the vacated spots with native plants. Native species are adapted to your local environment, capable of coexisting harmoniously with other native plants and local wildlife. Opting for native plants contributes to creating a resilient and sustainable landscape that bolsters the overall health of our ecosystems.

There are a large variety of native trees, bushes, and flowering plants that will fill any niche on your property and once established, will provide many benefits that invasive plants can’t come close to providing.

Finding and acquiring native plants can still prove difficult in many areas. At this point, demand is outpacing supply in many locations. There are some amazing local native plant providers and more and more frequent native plant sales and I encourage you to seek them out. It’s ideal to have genetics as close to your locale as possible so local growers are more likely to provide that.

I’d also encourage you to visit your local garden centers and nurseries and ask them “where is your native plant section?”. The more often we can do this the more likely they are to start providing what we’re looking for.

Nature, in its undisturbed state, maintains a dynamic equilibrium, with various species and ecological processes interacting in a balanced way. Invasive species throw off this balance by dominating native species and disrupting ecological processes and providing little to no value to local pollinators and wildlife.

Therefore, by eliminating these invasive species, you are helping to restore this balance, contributing to the overall health and resilience of your local ecosystems. You’re not only enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your garden, but you’re also contributing to larger ecological conservation efforts, making a real difference in the preservation of our natural world.
