Oh man, isn’t this beautiful? No. Over here I’m talking about this prairie.
If you are considering putting in a prairie or, or hopefully you’re even starting plans for it.
I want to tell you how I went from this turf grass last year at this time to this prairie this year at this time.
There’s a couple methods to go about doing this and there are also other management methods once it’s growing.
But I’ll tell you what I did here.
Late summer, probably late July, early August of last year, I scalp mowed this area, stressed the grass because it was hot out at that time, and exposed weed seeds to the sun. I then did two applications of RoundUp (glyphosate). Whether you agree, or not, let’s discuss it in the comments and we’ll have a conversation about it.
What I did after that is I sourced a really good native seed mix, not a wildflower mix, native seed mix. And I seeded this, broadcast seed this in. I did it in early winter.
You want to make sure that you don’t get anxious and do it, and then it warms up and the seeds germinate.
I then did an over-seeding in early spring of a different native seed mix from a local source.
And what I have now is this beautiful little prairie in the middle of what was once turf grass just a year ago.
Now I do have a lot of annuals and biannuals. You can see a lot of Black-Eyed Susans, but I’m okay with that because there are a lot of native perennials that are in here that will come up.
And I do have a couple annual weeds. Um, but it’s okay because I’ll take some of this horse weed and I just won’t let it go to seed. I’ll cut it before it does that.
So hopefully you’re considering doing this.
